Students excited about careers in aerospace and defense, or local businesses pursuing work in the industry will soon have those opportunities locally thanks to a new partnership between Douglas County and aerospace leader Lockheed Martin.

During their regular business meeting Tuesday, March 8, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners approved an agreement with Lockheed Martin to develop a manufacturing incubator lab at one of the company’s facilities, near C-470 and Lucent Boulevard, in Highlands Ranch. Douglas County’s investment is $500,000.

The Ignite Lab will be a high-tech space for companies from the county and across the state to collaborate on projects and share resources, information and technical capabilities. Lockheed Martin plans to use the space for activities such as rapid prototyping, table-top demonstrations, and small satellite integration.

Through this agreement, local businesses will have new access to the aerospace and defense industries and supply chains. Local students will have additional opportunities as well, including possibilities to work on projects with experts in science, technology, engineering and math.

One of the Board’s core priorities is a strong and viable economy where everyone can thrive. As such, the Board invests in economic development activities that are foundational to economic growth. In this case, the board’s investment will generate workforce and local business opportunity.
