Disease Surveillance

The Douglas County Health Department conducts disease surveillance to control the spread of communicable (contagious) disease. These diseases can be spread in a variety of ways: person to person, contact with animals, or eating contaminated food and water. This includes serious diseases such as E. coli, Salmonella, and rabies.

Illnesses are reported directly to the Douglas County Health Department and discovered through investigations. Communicable disease staff conduct interviews and investigations to learn about disease transmission and prevent further illness in Douglas County.

Increase in Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Infections

Respiratory infections caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae have been increasing, particularly in young children.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of mild respiratory illness, but it can cause severe illness. Symptoms include a gradual onset of fever, cough, and sore throat, sometimes progressing to “walking pneumonia.” Severe complications may require hospitalization.

If you or a loved one experiences symptoms of a cold that do not resolve or that worsen, seek medical care from a healthcare provider. Prevent the spread of respiratory infections by washing your hands, covering coughs and colds, and staying home when sick.
