During an August 19, 2021, Special Business Meeting, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners unanimously passed a Resolution Opting Out of Tri-County Health Department Mandatory Mask Order for Students Age 2-11.

The resolution states that the Board of Douglas County Commissioners opts out of the Tri-County Health Department Public Health Order dated August 17, 2021 to take effect August 23, 2021 that would have required masking for staff and children in childcares and schools serving students 11 and younger.

At the meeting, 60 members of the public provided their comments to the commissioners, 37 in person and 23 virtually. Of those, 55 spoke in favor of the proposed resolution and five spoke against it.

The Board of Douglas County Commissioners offered the following statement:

“Effective with our adoption of this resolution, there is, therefore, no Public Health Order in Douglas County, and at this time the final decision whether to mask children in childcares and schools rests not with Tri-County Health Department but with the Douglas County School District Board, charter and private schools, and childcare providers, all who set their own policies.”
