Septic Systems

On-Site Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) also known as a septic system, treats the wastewater on an individual’s property. Septic systems are installed on properties that cannot be served by a wastewater utility. The Douglas County Health Department permits the installation, repair, and use of these systems in all areas of the county. To request an inspection, submit completed applications, designs, and other paperwork, or report complaints or concerns of public health significance please email [email protected]

Rules and Regulations
OWTS are regulated by Douglas County Health Department Regulation 22-01, as well as governed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Regulation No. 43.

Bedroom
A bedroom is defined in the regulations as a room with an egress window, a closet, and/or is intended for sleeping purposes. The Douglas County Health Department references the MSL and may work with the building department to determine the number of bedrooms of any given property.
