Support for Quitting Smoking, Vaping and Tobacco

Did you know medical insurance may be able to help you or a family member quit smoking?

Quitting tobacco products is a journey and may take several attempts, but there are resources to help. Coaching, nicotine replacement therapy, and social support can all be important aspects of the quitting process and are offered in many of the programs included below.

Talk to your doctor about quitting and check with your insurance to see what medications are covered. Quitting often takes several different approaches, many of which are covered by insurance or offered for free or at a low cost.

Explore the following resources to help you or those you care about find the support they need to make the choice to quit and lead a healthier life.

It's never too late to quit!

How does quitting smoking improve your life?

  • After 24 hours the nicotine level in the blood drops to zero
  • After 1-12 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease
  • After 1 year, the risk of heart disease drops to half of someone who smokes
  • After 3-6 years, the risk of coronary heart disease drops by half
  • After 5 years, the risk of mouth, throat and esophagus cancer is cut in half
  • After 15 years, the risk of heart disease drops close to someone who does not smoke

“Quit-Kits” are available for community members at both Douglas County Health Department offices during business hours. The “Quit-Kits” can be a first step in taking the journey towards a tobacco-free life. Come pick one up today!
