Board of County Commissioners Works with Federal Government

Federal funds contribute to local community programs in Douglas County

Did you know that Douglas County received more than $90 million in grants from the federal government in 2024? This federal funding supports local community programs such as WIC, childhood vaccines, the County’s crime lab, emergency services, road projects, behavioral health resources and more.

This 2024 total also includes American Rescue Plan Act Funding, which the Board of Douglas County Commissioners invested in new programs to address domestic violence, suicide, homelessness, Veterans mental health, wildfires and more. ARPA funding also supports water and wastewater projects, resources for individuals in our community with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and resources for older adults. The Board continues to leverage interest earned on that funding to stretch the federal dollars even further, which so far has meant an additional $6.6 million for community programs in Douglas County.

Commissioners Visit Washington, D.C. every year

Each year – no matter the political party in the White House or Congress – the Board of County Commissioners travels to Washington D.C. to maintain relationships that foster this financial support for the Douglas County community.

This year the Board is making an aggressive push to bring even more federal dollars back to Douglas County communities. The Board is optimistic about securing new federal funding through Congressionally Directed Spending and Community Project Funding requests. The Commissioners have already met with Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, Congressman Gabe Evans, Congressman Jeff Crank, and staff from the Appropriations Committee to discuss potential projects and these funding opportunities.

The Board of County Commissioners is also already pursuing federal grants for 2025 and has already met with the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Reclamation and Forest Service to discuss new opportunities.

Here is a summary of the Board’s 2025 meetings in Washington, D.C. to date. The total cost for three Commissioners for the January trip – including airfare, hotel, parking, Uber in DC, and food – was $12,744.21
