Veteran/Military Identifier on Colorado Driver License or ID

Colorado statute allows eligible applicants to add a veteran indicator, military identifier, or both, to their Driver License or ID card.

The word “VETERAN” may be printed on the Driver License or ID card if the applicant is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and presents one of the following documents at a Driver License Office:

  • Valid military identification card
  • DD214 form issued by the U.S. government indicating an honorable discharge (a photocopy or electronic version is acceptable)

MILITARY IDENTIFIER may be added to the Driver License or ID card for applicants who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.  Only one military identifier may be added to any document (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard or Navy). Military identifiers from other states do not transfer – applicants must present one of the following documents at a Driver License Office to add a military identifier:

  • Valid military identification card
  • DD214 form issued by the U.S. government (a photocopy or electronic version is acceptable)

Once the veteran indicator and/or military identifier has been added to the Driver License or ID card, additional documentation is not required at renewal.

Click here for Additional Active Duty and Military Veterans Driver License/ID Information.

Disability Identifier on Colorado Driver License or ID

Colorado statute allows eligible applicants to voluntarily add a disability identifier to their Driver License or ID card.

The disability identifier helps eligible Coloradans easily and discreetly communicate that they have one or more disabilities. This is helpful during medical emergencies and interactions with law enforcement when communication can be difficult.

Cost: $30.87  (Add $2 if renewal includes a Motorcycle Endorsement)

Concerned With A Loved One's Safety When Driving?

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles recommends 5 Stages of having the conversation with a family member on when it is time to retire from driving. There are also specific skills and abilities to consider: Mental, Physical, Visual, and Reaction Time. Please use the helpful handout provided here for more information.

Concerned family members can submit a request for re-examination due to physical or mental constraints by emailing [email protected]. The email should include the driver’s name and date of birth, the reason for concern, and the name and relationship to the driver.
