Commissioners support public safety, mental health, and question red flag bill constitutionality

Commissioner Abe Laydon“We think it’s time you hear directly from your Board of Douglas County Commissioners regarding the ‘red flag’ bill, just signed into law by Governor Polis.  Regarding this new law, the issue is not whether those with mental illness who pose a risk should have their gun rights restricted.

That is already a well-settled law, that we support.

What is in question with the new ‘red flag’ law, is the entire process that results in guns being removed and whether that process upholds your constitutional rights.”

County Commissioner and Vice Chair, Lora Thomas

“What is not in question is our commitment and investment in public safety and improved mental health services for residents of Douglas County.

What also is not in question is our support of the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Colorado. We cannot and will not stand idly by as your freedoms and liberties are threatened.

With that in mind, this Board remains focused on ensuring your constitutional rights will not be violated.”

County Commissioner and Board Chair, Roger Partridge

“Just because legislators pass a bill, and the Governor signs it into law, doesn’t guarantee that law is constitutional. That will be determined by a court of law.

We are determined to work with many other, Colorado Counties who are equally committed to an independent, objective legal review of the new law in order to ultimately determine the constitutionality.

We invite you to remain engaged with us as we continue to respectfully and fairly explore this important issue for our community.
