Community Service, also known as Alternative Service/Useful Public Service, is designed to help alleviate jail crowding by offering the District and County courts an alternate sentencing option. As a substitute to serving a jail sentence, the courts may opt to have the defendant perform community service. Our CJS officers place and supervise defendants who have been convicted of traffic, misdemeanor, and felony offenses and who are ordered by the court to perform community service. This is a restorative approach to sentencing that allows the defendants to give back to the community.
Please report to Community Justice Services between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday to set up your community service. Intakes are completed on a walk in basis; therefore, process times can vary from 30 minutes to roughly 60 minutes. Please plan accordingly.
Client will meet with an officer to complete the intake and be provided with the necessary forms to get signed-up with an agency. Clients will also be provided with an approved agency list. Any hours completed with an agency that is not approved, or hours completed prior to completing an intake, will not be credited. This also applies to the CPR Certification and Whole Blood Donation, if completed before the intake, no credit hours will be applied.
Credit for American Red Cross and Vitalant can only be given to Douglas County Cases. These options are NOT eligible for Out of County Cases that have been referred to Douglas County for courtesy monitoring.
Please reach your assigned community service officer if you have any additional questions or visit our FAQ page for more information.
