Get to know your new 23rd Judicial District

Watch a conversation with District Attorney-Elect George Brauchler

The District Attorney who will lead the new 23rd Judicial District has a clear public safety message:

“There are parts of the metro area that take a far more forgiving and permissive approach to crime and criminals,” said George Brauchler, who was elected in November to lead the new 23rd Judicial District. “The message I want people to hear is…if you come down here to victimize us, if you come down here to steal from us, you should expect to be incarcerated.”

The DA-elect addressed media and the public for the first time on behalf of the new judicial district today. Watch a recording of the news conference on YouTube.

With the exponential growth in Arapahoe, Douglas, Lincoln and Elbert counties, local officials began advocating for a new judicial district in 2018. The creation of the 23rd Judicial District allows for prosecutorial decisions and resources to focus on crime occurring in only Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties, keeping a closer eye on safety and crime in your communities.

“The enthusiasm we found for DA-Elect Brauchler’s approach to law enforcement is absolutely what the people of Douglas County want as well,” said Commissioner George Teal. “This is a place of freedom, but freedom must include safety. So, it’s refreshing to hear that from DA-Elect Brauchler.”

“When we say we fund the police, we don’t de-fund the police, those aren’t just words for a press conference,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon. “Douglas County invests more of its budget in public safety than any other county in the state. We are also deeply focused on the safety of our kids. We have the highest number of school resource officers in the state. We are going to continue to focus forward on being healthy, wealthy, and wise. This is a dream team right here. We’re looking forward to 2025.”

“Splitting from Arapahoe County and the 18th Judicial District, for me, was about trying to bring government home to the people. Allowing the people of Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties to elect someone who reflects them and their communities and allow Arapahoe County to do the exact same thing,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle, who worked on the legislation to create the 23rd Judicial District in his role as a State Senator. “I was born and raised here. My kids were born here, and I am raising them here, and they deserve safe schools and safe streets.”

DA-elect Brauchler will be sworn in on Jan. 14, 2025, officially creating the first new judicial district in the State of Colorado since 1965. This new judicial district, while smaller, will still be among the five largest judicial districts in the state, and the members of this community intend it to remain the safest.

“If you are a criminal or someone with bad intentions, don’t come to the 23rd Judicial District. We will go out of our way to track you down and hold you accountable,” said Sheriff Darren Weekly. “If you run from us, you will go to jail extra tired with additional charges. We will do everything we can to keep our community safe.”
