Hometown Healthcare: Board of Douglas County Commissioners contributes $1 million to enhance Cancer Care accessibility

Having access to quality healthcare is what helps communities like ours thrive. Since the creation of the Douglas County Health Department, your county leaders have been committed to bringing tailor-made health solutions to Douglas County.

At their regular Business Meeting Jan. 28, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners voted to approve a $1 million Beneficiary Agreement with the AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Foundation. The funding will be used for the acquisition and installation of a state-of-the-art Vision RT Radiation Therapy system at AdventHealth Castle Rock. This investment marks a significant step forward in advancing cancer care for residents of central and southern Douglas County.

“This is a huge step forward for Douglas County,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle. “No family is free from the devastating effects of cancer, and this work highlights what we as a Board can do for the people of Douglas County.” Van Winkle represented the Board at the AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Foundation Fundraising Gala Thursday night, where he presented the check to the organization.

The Vision RT Radiation Therapy system is a cutting-edge technology designed to provide highly precise and effective cancer treatments. The installation of this system will allow AdventHealth Castle Rock to offer oncology services locally, addressing a critical healthcare gap in Castle Rock. Currently, advanced cancer care is not available in this area, creating barriers to timely and consistent treatment.

“You don’t know that Castle Rock does not have cancer care until you need it,” shared Marcy Blair, Chair, AdventHealth Castle Rock Foundation Board. “Eight rounds of chemo and 37 rounds of radiation later, I have to thank you for standing with us to bring expert cancer care to our community.”

The County’s contribution comes from accrued interest earned on Douglas County’s allocation under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). By leveraging this resource, the County aims to address urgent healthcare needs while fostering economic development.

“Supporting healthy families in Douglas County means being there for citizens who may be struggling the most. Providing cancer care where there was none before is a powerful investment that we believe will truly save lives and make a meaningful difference for good in our community. Our thanks to AdventHealth and the visionary cancer survivors who inspired us with their vision,” shared Commissioner Abe Laydon, Board Chair.

“I want to thank the AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Foundation for this innovative thinking and for bringing this idea to us,” said Commissioner George Teal. “It’s truly an honor to partner with the foundation to bring this resource to our community.”

An economic impact analysis conducted by the Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center highlights the economic advantages of the Cancer Center:

AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Foundation works to accelerate the transformation of health care and close the gap of unmet needs throughout the front range. With this $1 million Beneficiary Agreement, the organization is closer to its goal of $14.1 million needed for the state-of-the-art radiation center but is still looking to raise the remaining funds.
