Mountain Bike Patrol program brings Open Space Rangers to you

Have you ever needed information or advice from a Ranger while enjoying one of our open space properties? Now Douglas County Open Space Rangers have a better way to reach you.

Thanks to a new Mountain Bike Patrol Program launched in early 2021, Rangers can more easily interact with you while you are experiencing the beautiful DCOutdoors.

There are more than 100 miles of trails available on Douglas County Open Space to hike, bike or ride and in 2020 29% more of you took advantage of them than in 2019! All open space trails are designed for multiple uses including hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, and over the past few years, mountain biking has steadily gained popularity.

The Mountain Bike Patrol pedals beyond the trailhead and parking areas allowing more frequent and pleasant interactions with our visitors. These specially trained Rangers can now model good trail etiquette, provide visitor education, assess trail conditions, and understand more fully how people are using the trails and properties.

With the partnership of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), the Mountain Bike Patrol was able to get off to a rolling start. The DSCO loaned Open Space two state-of-the-art patrol bikes and invited two Rangers to attend the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) training where both became certified as IPMBA First Responders.
