Are you or someone close to you battling illness this winter? Douglas County, along with much of Colorado, is experiencing an increase in Norovirus, and your Douglas County Health Department has some tips to help you and your family stay healthy.
Norovirus, sometimes referred to as “stomach flu,” is a highly contagious, common viral illness. Its incidence is highest between November and April, but the number of outbreaks so far this season is higher than in past years. Infection is caused by consuming contaminated food or water or direct contact with a sick person.
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever, body aches, and stomach cramps, there is a chance they may have the virus. Here’s what to know:
- If you feel unwell, stay home until you are completely recovered.
- If you are unable to stay hydrated or have severe symptoms, seek immediate medical care.
- Symptoms typically last between 1 and 3 days, and symptoms begin about 1 to 3 days after being exposed to a sick person or contaminated food or surface.
The best way to prevent Norovirus illness is:
- Stay home to avoid spreading germs
- Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom or changing a diaper, and before eating or preparing food for yourself or others. It’s important to note that hand sanitizer is not effective against Norovirus.
