You see acts of service in our community every day. You know businesses celebrating anniversaries, and students achieving high honors in academics, activities and sports.
Your Board of Douglas County Commissioners is seeking your help to celebrate the men, women and young people in our community who impact the lives of others – as we all honor each other.
Commissioners launched this initiative – the Douglas County Hall of Fame – at their Tuesday, March 11, Business Meeting by welcoming Staff Sgt. Howard A. Berger, 101, and presenting him with an official Douglas County Commissioner Challenge Coin. (Pictured above)
Not only is Mr. Berger one of an estimated 825 Colorado centenarians, he also bravely fought in WWII, served the US Army overseas as a civilian for more than 50 years and launched the “Over 90 Charitable Gift Annuity Plan,” which allows charities to pay higher rates of return on charitable gift annuities.
“Mr. Berger exemplifies living a life of service,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle. “It’s an honor to show our gratitude to a member of the greatest generation, someone whom every one of us can look up to and learn from.”
“It’s pretty rare to engage with a centenarian, let alone someone who served so honorably,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon. “No matter where you live in Colorado, Douglas County will always be a place where we honor Veterans and those who have sacrificed for their country.”
“On behalf of all of us who have come after you and attempted to live up to the legacy that your generation established during World War II, I want to thank you for being an exceptional example to all of us,” said Commissioner George Teal, a Veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Pacific Haven.
Now, it’s your turn to tell us about someone who is deserving of community recognition. Find more information and a nomination form on our webpage.
