Your choice to give matters in Douglas County. Thanks to your generous donations as part of the countywide “Handouts Don’t Help” campaign, $2,500 was raised and given to the Help & Hope Center during a Douglas County Homeless Initiative meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. The check was presented by the Douglas County Community Foundation, manager of the donor-directed fund.
You’ve contributed more than $13,994 since 2023. One hundred percent of funds donated to Douglas Has Heart.org benefit local nonprofits that help people who have fallen on hard times or are at risk of experiencing homelessness in our community. Previous checks have been presented to Help & Hope Center, SECOR Cares, Parker Task Force and HEART. Each of these organizations work to provide food, shelter and emergency resources to people in our community.
“When it comes to homelessness, we lead with compassion,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon, Board Chair and Chair of the Douglas County Homeless Initiative. “We are profoundly grateful for our partner nonprofits, like Help and Hope, that maximize donations to assist those in our community who have fallen on hard times.”

In October 2022, your municipal and county elected officials, faith-based leadership, law enforcement agencies, and business community united in the “Handouts Don’t Help” signage campaign that invites a shared approach to panhandling, activating a direct system of support to those in need.
The Handouts Don’t Help campaign is a program of the Douglas County Homeless Initiative, which began in 2022 with the goal of addressing homelessness in Douglas County with compassion by partnering with others, including municipalities, non-profits, law enforcement agencies, faith leaders, mental health experts, the school district, and individual residents.
