Your property tax relief check is in the mail

Douglas County property owners receive a historic $37.8 million in tax relief – about $200 per residential property

Do you own a home or other property in Douglas County? Check your mail this week for your property tax relief refund check.

In 2023, Douglas County homeowners experienced the largest increase in home values in state history. While property value reassessment is a state-controlled process, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners acted at the local level to mitigate this impact, including a reduction in Douglas County’s share of your property tax bill.

What do you need to know?

Relief checks were mailed Friday, July 12, to the address of record for every property in Douglas County. Checks are expected to arrive in mailboxes the week of July 15.
To receive a check, you (or your mortgage company) must have paid the property tax bill by the deadline. Checks are being mailed directly to property owners, not mortgage companies.
Deposit or cash your check by Dec. 1, 2024. After that, uncashed checks will be credited toward property taxes to be paid in 2025.
The relief check represents about 19% of Douglas County’s portion of your property tax bill (not your total property tax bill.) Average checks will be about $200, depending on the actual amount paid to Douglas County. To see details about this calculation for your property, visit douglas.co.us/assessor.
